Benefits of Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems

Air Options is an established HVAC company in South Africa, specializing in in custom HVAC systems that are designed to meet the specific requirements of a building.

One of our best products is the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system which comes with a number of benefits. In this article we take a look at how a VRF system works as well as what its benefits are.

What is a Variable Refrigerant Flow System?

The technology used in VRF HVAC systems alternate refrigerant volume to precisely match a building’s requirements. This intelligent system is able to heat and cool individual rooms and different zones according to the needs of that room. In other words, a VRF system is designed to cool some rooms and heat others all from the same system.

Additionally, a variable refrigerant flow system is able to automatically shut off when no occupants are detected in the room. These features combined make it one of the most energy efficient HVAC systems around.

A single outside unit services several indoor units which, in turn, provides customized thermal control to an individual zone within the building. Each zone will have its own requirements met by a single system outside of the building.

Benefits of a Variable Refrigerant Flow System

Flexibility

They offer rapid response to heating and/or cooling requirements for individual building zones. This feature allows for heat to be recovered from one zone and transferred to another, increasing the system’s energy efficiency.

Easy Maintenance

Maintenance of VRF systems is easier than traditional split HVAC systems as there is only one unit installed on the outside of the building. Additionally, having a single outdoor unit allows for more sophisticated condenser technology which directly translates to improved efficiency.

Precise Temperature Control

Different zones require different temperature and humidity control. Different to traditional HVAC systems, VRF systems do not offer a single temperature option for the entire building and its different zones. This is ideal for office buildings where people require livable temperature control, while other areas such as server rooms require lower temperatures that are not suitable for daily occupancy.

Quieter

VRF systems are silent and often can not be heard at all. This is mainly due to the unit being installed outside often on the roof of a building, far away from occupants. Some traditional systems are loud and not suitable for office buildings or other environments where silence is a necessity.
