Variable Refrigerant Flow

Variable Refrigerant Flow

Variable refrigerant flow systems have one outdoor condensing unit and multiple indoor units. The name variable refrigerant flow describes the system’s ability to control the amount of refrigerant that flows to the multiple indoor evaporator units.

This function enables the use of many evaporators with varying configurations and capacities to be connected to a single condensing unit and further makes zone control possible.

Types of Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems

  • 2 pipe heat pumps system
  • 3 pipe heat recovery system
  • Variable refrigerant flow water cooled
  • Gas driven

In accordance with specific conditioning requirements, these intelligent systems are able to modulate the amount of refrigerant sent to each zone. A variable speed drive controls the external compressor, making individualized temperature control for each zone possible.

Additionally, variable refrigerant flow systems have the ability to heat and cool separate rooms simultaneously and can also transfer the energy from rooms that are being cooled to rooms that are being heated, making it more energy efficient than most other systems.
